In addition, two participants (4% of randomised participants) in the aripiprazole arm discontinued the study due to adverse events. Aripiprazole was assessed in two studies on its own 28, 62, and once in a study that also had a second active agent arm—methylphenidate . This study was not placebo controlled, control participants were provided with a reduced dose of imipramine (10 mg versus 150 mg daily), primarily to increase blinding efficacy and acceptability by staff and participants. One study examined imipramine (150 mg po OD) for the treatment of cocaine and MA dependence .
Also, people sweat profusely, and their pupils are dilated. Amphetamine users frequently develop dependence, often referred to as a substance use disorder. Methamphetamine is the most commonly used amphetamine in the United States. Through reliable resources, accessible services, and nurturing communities, we support greater self-understanding, authentic connection, and healthier lives.
Benzodiazepines can cause drowsiness, while amphetamines induce alertness. The most common side effect of taking benzodiazepines and amphetamines together is increased anxiety and paranoia. The use of the drugs together can cause a lack of awareness, induce substance toxicity, and may result in fatal overdose. Generally, amphetamines will stay in your system for about two to three days.
S2 Text. Summary of statistical analysis and GRADE.
Psychostimulants that increase dopamine and mimic the effects of substituted amphetamines, but with lower abuse liability, could theoretically be used as replacement therapy in amphetamine dependence. However, if people misuse these drugs, they can develop dependence and amphetamine addiction.4 Detox is a crucial part of treatment, focusing on clearing amphetamines from the body while managing withdrawal symptoms. Although amphetamines serve important medical purposes, their misuse can lead to addiction and serious health risks. The most effective interventions for the treatment of amphetamine addiction involve some type of cognitive behavioral therapy. In 2016, 4% of admissions for treatment of drug abuse were for methamphetamine in the entire state, with lower rates in the southeastern Florida region.
Physical Signs
These misdiagnoses carry the risk of not treating the correct cause of the diagnosis and expose individuals to risk of addiction and toxicity. One common misconception that may lead to the diversion of amphetamines is that stimulants improve academic success and focus (24). Profit-based pharmaceutical companies clearly recognize the financial potential behind addictive drugs, as first demonstrated by the opioid epidemic as well as the tobacco industry, and now appearing again with the rise in amphetamine use. The push for amphetamines as a regular treatment for an ADHD diagnosis can be traced back to the 1990s (11).
- Amphetamine drugs tend to display a common set of withdrawal symptoms, though there may be some differences between them.
- Most amphetamines have similar effects, but there’s significant variation between substances in the duration of the psychoactive effects and the intensity .
- In other words, it is not documented how BCBT is efficacious for treating amphetamine abuse/use disorder alone or in combination with pharmacological treatments in other countries.
- If intestinal activity is high, amphetamine may reduce gastrointestinal motility (the rate at which content moves through the digestive system); however, amphetamine may increase motility when the smooth muscle of the tract is relaxed.
- Many current amphetamine pharmaceuticals are salts due to the comparatively high volatility of the free base.
- Unlike Ritalin and Adderall, which are both composed of amphetamine salt mixtures, Vyvanse contains a compound called lisdexamfetamine.
Methamphetamine is also an agonist of the alpha-2 adrenergic receptors and sigma receptors with a greater affinity for σ1 than σ2, and inhibits monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) and monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B). Hypertension presents a risk for intracranial hemorrhage (i.e., bleeding in the brain) and, if severe, is typically treated with intravenous phentolamine or nitroprusside. It frequently refers to the exaggeration of the unusual effects with features such as irritability, agitation, hallucinations and paranoia. This withdrawal syndrome is relatively mild and only requires medical intervention in approximately 4% of cases.

Prescription amphetamines are also strong stimulants but are not as powerful as cocaine. Mixing amphetamines with other substances, such as methamphetamines or heroin, can be dangerous and even fatal. The half-life of a drug is the time it takes for the concentration of the drug in your body to decrease by half, with amphetamines having a relatively short half-life. Amphetamine drugs can have both positive and negative side effects. Both Adderall and Ritalin are CNS stimulants used to treat the same type of mental health disorders.
These drugs can interact with alcohol and have unwanted effects. The dosage strengths for amphetamines vary widely depending on the drug. Because of this, some drugs only contain dextroamphetamine or have it in greater proportions.
- While inpatient care requires that clients live on campus, outpatient rehab means they engage in therapy part-time and can return to their own home at night.
- It was used by all branches of the combined armed forces of the Third Reich, for its stimulant effects and to induce extended wakefulness.
- Risk of bias in individual study methods and reporting are included in Supplementary Table 1 and Supplementary Data (see ESM) as considerations across a number of domains.
- Medical professionals closely monitor individuals during this process to ensure their safety and well-being.
- Reviews of human studies have also noted that men typically report stronger positive subjective responses to amphetamine compared to women tested during the luteal phase, whereas these sex differences are absent when women are tested during the follicular phase;sources 18 subjective responses to amphetamine appear to correlate positively with plasma or salivary estrogen concentrations.
- Although amphetamine and methamphetamine pills can be swallowed, pills and powder may be dissolved in water and injected, especially when taken illicitly.
- In non-medical users, amphetamines are often used to increase energy levels or achieve a sense of euphoria.

They are often abused due to their ability to produce euphoria, increase energy, and suppress appetite. The compulsion to use the drug can consume a person’s thoughts and actions, making it difficult to focus on anything else. It can lead to physical and mental health problems, strained relationships, financial difficulties, and legal issues. However, when used recreationally or in higher doses than prescribed, they can lead to addiction. Amphetamines are commonly prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. This study was supported by the National Centre for Clinical Research on Emerging Drugs (NCCRED).
The clinical relevance of this finding is key, because achieving long-term abstinence is the main treatment goal for individuals with cocaine and/or amphetamine addiction . International guidelines are unclear on whether any specific intervention should be considered first 9,10; for example, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends CM alone, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) alone, or self-help groups based on 12-step programme alone for the treatment of individuals with stimulant use disorders . Currently, international clinical guidelines recommend the use of psychosocial interventions for cocaine and/or amphetamine addiction as first-line treatment, and there is little evidence supporting pharmacotherapy or brain stimulation treatments 6–8. Cocaine and amphetamines are the most commonly abused stimulants in people aged 15–64 years, with an annual prevalence of misuse of 0.38% and 1.20%, respectively . We aimed to estimate the comparative effectiveness of all available psychosocial interventions (alone or in combination) for the short- and long-term treatment of people with cocaine and/or amphetamine addiction. If you have developed an addiction to amphetamines, shortcut your search for help by engaging in outpatient treatment at our California substance abuse treatment center.
Methamphetamine users, particularly heavy users, may lose their teeth abnormally quickly, regardless of the route of administration, from a condition informally known as meth mouth. Methamphetamine also promotes abnormal extra heartbeats and irregular heart rhythms, which may be life-threatening. Owing to the potential for stunted growth, the FDA advises monitoring the height and weight of growing children and adolescents during treatment. Methamphetamine is sometimes prescribed off-label for obesity, narcolepsy, and idiopathic hypersomnia. Methamphetamine neurotoxicity causes adverse changes in brain structure and function, such as reductions in grey matter volume in several brain regions, as well as adverse changes in markers of metabolic integrity.
Similarly, while women were often excluded by the study design, no study examined only women. The desired goal of urine drug tests detection times pharmacotherapy will likely vary depending on the patient, and must be patient-focused and clinically relevant. Although adherence was reported in most of the studies reviewed here, the methods and definitions were discordant across studies.

Finally, because of the similarities in chemical structure and behavioural, psychological and physical effects of AMPH and MA , we have included studies of AMPH and MA, and studies that did not Norco and alcohol distinguish between AMPH and MA. For example, no study we reviewed here assessed specific populations such as indigenous peoples. In one study, consumption of MA was classified as ‘heavy use’ among participants providing three MA-positive UDS/fortnight, while in another study, ‘heavy use’ was classified as self-reported use of 18 days of the prior 30. Disparate criteria were also used when determining eligibility for a study; for example, the definition of ‘low-use’ (AMPH/MA) in the studies reviewed here was 5 days, 10 days and 18 days of the past 30 in various studies. While some studies define success by abstinence from AMPH/MA, others consider a reduction in use to be a measure of treatment success.
The width of the lines is proportional to the number of trials comparing every pair of treatments, and the size of every node is proportional to the number of randomised participants. The figure plots the network of eligible direct comparisons for abstinence at the end of treatment (46 trials) (A) and dropout due to any cause (43 studies) (B). A total of 37 studies were followed up after study completion, for a mean duration of 41.4 weeks (range 16–96). The mean study sample size was 139 participants, ranging between 19 and 487 participants.
Due to the potential for reversible growth impairments, note 11 the FDA advises monitoring the height and weight of children and adolescents prescribed an amphetamine pharmaceutical. It is also contraindicated in individuals with advanced arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), glaucoma (increased eye pressure), hyperthyroidism (excessive production of thyroid hormone), or moderate to severe hypertension. Immediate-release formulations have higher potential for abuse via insufflation (snorting) or intravenous injection due to a more favorable pharmacokinetic profile and easy crushability (especially tablets). A notable part of the 1960s mod subculture in the UK was recreational amphetamine use, which was used to fuel all-night dances at clubs like Manchester’s Twisted Wheel. However, high amphetamine doses that are above the therapeutic range can interfere with working memory and other aspects of cognitive control. Amphetamine and other ADHD stimulants also improve task saliency (motivation to perform a task) and increase arousal (wakefulness), in turn promoting goal-directed behavior.
However, the effects of psychosocial therapies are often not sustained following liberty caps gills their cessation 14, 18, and are less effective for severe disorder (long duration, frequent use) . DSM-V Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fifth edition, SUD stimulant use disorder The characteristic withdrawal syndrome for the stimulant (refer to criteria A and B of the criteria set for Stimulant Withdrawal) Continued stimulant use despite having persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by the effects of the stimulant A great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain the stimulant, use the stimulant, or recover from its effects
The Cochrane Review included a fourth study not reviewed here. These include a double-blind placebo-controlled study of NAC (1200 mg po BD) in outpatients over 12 weeks currently recruiting in Australia. Participants received concomitant psychosocial therapy, and the authors suggest that mirtazapine may be a useful adjunct to psychosocial therapy, but only in the examined population.
Most participants were patients with high rates of daily amphetamine use and mental health problems 14–23. Any type of pharmacological treatment for an amphetamine problem was acceptable for study inclusion. The diagnosis of an amphetamine problem (abuse, dependence or use disorder) needed to be confirmed according to a validated measure such as different versions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). To date, there is no systematic review to specifically show the efficacy of BCBT for treating amphetamines abusers in the world. To date, there are no systematic reviews that specifically show the effectiveness of pharmacological treatments alone or in combination with BCBT in treating Iranian amphetamine abusers.
